On Tuesday, November 15, 2011, Mayor George F. Apel and the 2011-13 Town Council held their first town council meeting at 7:00 p.m. At the meeting, the new council approved a temporary fee waiver for open burn permits. The fee waiver is expected to help residents in need of clean-up from accumulated tree debris resulting from Winter Storm Alfred on Saturday, October 29, 2011.
Beginning today, Tuesday, November 15, 2011, until Sunday, December 4, 2011, residents will be able to obtain an open burning permit without having to pay the mandated $50.00 fee. Permits will be issued at the Fire Marshall’s office, located at the Vernon Building Department (55 West Main Street).
While the fee has been waived, residents are reminded that they still need to get a permit; residents who do not obtain one will be in violation of Vernon Code and can be fined $99.00. For more information, residents should call Vernon Town Hall at (860) 870-3601.
Additionally, the Town Council scheduled a Public Hearing regarding an ordinance adopting reimbursement for costs of fire hydrants and street lights within the town’s residential condominium complexes and planned unit developments. The Public Hearing is scheduled to be held at 7:05 p.m. on Tuesday, December 6, 2011, at the next town council meeting. The hearing will be held in the Town Council Chambers (Vernon Town Hall – 3rd Floor – 14 Park Place).
