Mayor George F. Apel today has announced that Town Council has approved an additional emergency appropriation to cover the costs incurred as a result of Winter Storm Alfred. On November 15, 2011, the Town Council approved $2,834,000 in emergency appropriations in addition to the initial $420,000 that was approved on November 3, 2011. Today’s approval brings the total storm appropriations to $3,816,000.
According to the Vernon Town Charter, Chapter 12, Section 8, no annual emergency appropriations are to exceed five percent of the current budget. As a result, a Public Hearing was held at this evening’s Town Council meeting to approve a resolution for the additional $562,000 to fund emergency protective measures and debris removal resulting from Winter Storm Alfred. At the hearing, the funds were approved by the public.
On November 17, 2011, the President of the United States issued a major disaster declaration for the State of Connecticut as a result of the rare October winter storm. Mayor Apel and the town will be pursuing Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) assistance to cover the emergency funding.
