Mayor George F. Apel is currently serving his first term as Mayor of the Town of Vernon, which began November 14, 2011. Prior to serving as Mayor, George spent the past four years serving on the Vernon Board of Education (BOE). In 2007 and 2009, George served as both Treasurer of the Vernon BOE and Chair of the Vernon BOE negotiating committee, respectively.
George was appointed to the School Building Advisory Commission in 2005, which was tasked with overseeing the renovation Vernon’s schools. In 2007, George also filled a vacancy on the Town Council, where he served one term in 1993. George has also served on the Permanent Municipal Building Committee and the Board of Assessment Appeals.
George is a graduate of Rockville High School. He earned a Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering (BSME) from the University of Hartford, and a Master of Business Administration (MBA) from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute. George is also a United States Navy Veteran, and a member of the First Congregational Church in Vernon.
George lives on Tallwood Drive in Vernon with his wife, Joan. He has two children and four grandchildren.
